We had a great night herping the other night when Andy came to visit from the states. We found 7 snakes in total, here's one of them - a mangrove cat snake, or banded cat snake, banded mangrove snake - whatever you want to call it. These are nocturnal snakes that get around 2 meters maximum length. They are rear-fanged and venomous, but not deadly - unless, of course, you are allergic to the venom. These snakes do bite often and quickly, handle them carefully if you find one.

Boiga dendrophila - another awesome Thailand snake.

One of my top 3 favorite snakes in all of Thailand is the Mangrove Pit Viper. These are small snakes, rarely over 1 meter in length. They get a couple of fingers thick, but usually not as thick as a wrist. They have a variety of temperaments. I've caught some that never stopped biting, some that eventually stopped, and some (well, one) that never struck out to bite.

We cruise through the mangroves on a long-tail boat in southern Thailand at high tide and go through places either we have seen, or others have seen these snakes. They are difficult to spot because they blend in so well. They have great patterns.

Their fangs are long - second longest fangs in Thailand for venomous snakes. The first being the Malayan Pit Viper. This isn't book knowledge, just based on what I've seen. I may be off, I haven't seen every snake in the country.

Their venom is cytotoxic - destroying cells of all types. You probably will not die, should you be envenomated by the Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus, but you should definitely visit the hospital as soon as possible after being bitten.
