At a recent Matisyahu concert I found myself back stage in the dressing room with a lot of time to kill. That is a normal occurrence when you are either on tour with a band or show up really early to a show.

I decided to jump onto Spreecast and give everyone out there a tour of the dressing room, stage, venue and the front of the venue. The entire time I was giving tips and tricks for shooting shows, dealing with tour managers and working with security.

Have you ever shot in single focus mode and you can swear your focus was locked on but when you looked at the image it was out of focus? Let me try and explain how single focus mode works and how you can use it properly to get tack sharp images.

For the purpose of this quick tip were only discussing focus, not exposure which is equally as important.

Before I fully break down single focus lets look at the focus modes you may encounter. For the most part you have single focus, continuos focus and manual focus.

Single focus is best used when your subjects are not moving such as portraits, landscapes or still lives. The idea behind single focus is that you hold the shutter button down until your focus locks on your subject. At that point as long as your finger is held half way down on the shutter button your focus will not shift away from where it locked.

This is a good thing when your not shooting moving subjects like i said above. Where some people run into issues with single focus is they lock the focus than they move or their subject moves. When this happens your focus is no longer going to be spot on from where you locked it. When the focs plane changes either by you moving or your subject moving you have to refocus.

Some tips to keep in mind are once you are locked in do not move forward or back. Try to keep the same focal plane and if you or the subject moves be sure to re focus. Depending on your fstop setting if you shoot at a higher number such as 8, 11, 16 you give yourself more leeway for movement.

But my major tip is to always re focus if you or the subject moves. One last tip is to focus on the subjects eyes opposed to focusing on their nose or forehead. This is best done in single focus where you focus on the eyes than recompose your image to where you would like it all without changing your focal plane.

This is the third and final installment where I help Sam build a portfolio for college. In Part 1 and Part 2 I was helping Sam try to figure out his style as well as sending him off to capture more images for us to choose from. Part 3 brings this process to a close when we start to narrow down all of his images to the 10 keepers for his portfolio.

I want to point out that I am not telling Sam what images he has to use in his portfolio. I am merely giving my professional opinion on what I think would work best for his college entrance portfolio. I mention that a few ties to him, that I think this would be a strong image but if there is another image you feel strongly about feel free to use it.

At the end of this video I left Sam to pick the 10 images he best thinks represents his photography. I was only his guide and sounding board in the process. Sure I have my opinions on what could be used and what may work better but in the end it comes down to Sam.

That brings up an interest point as well. There are so many opinions out there, so many people calling themselves experts and telling you to listen to them or else. Don't fall into that trap, ask a lot of questions of as many people you can while taking everything they say and filing it away to make your own decision. In the end you need to listen to yourself, you need to make the final decision based off of everything you know and not just one persons recommendation, remember that!!

I can honestly say that the photos form this weeks weekend theme were some of the strongest we have ever gotten. The Top 5 was so hard to pick as there were so many great images posted this weekend. I thank you guys so much for getting out there and shooting week in and week out.

Yes I had to go ahead and go the predictable rout for this weekends theme but with a slight twist. The theme is Valentines day but YOUR perception of it. A major question and concern for many photographers looking to make photography a career these days is "Can you make it as a photographer"? Brandon who is currently in college and is the photo editor of the school paper asked me this question during a recent SKYPE call. With the barrier for entry at a low point and the easy access to pro gear many people have flocked to being a photographer in the hopes of making it big. But the question still remains can they make it as a photographer today?

To answer this question I want to step back to a personal experience I had in the past with a Sports Illustrated photographer. He wanted to warn me that photography is a very very hard career to get into. I took what he said the wrong way, I thought he was telling me I would not make it or I should give up right there. What he was really doing was being honest, telling it like it is which so many people are afraid to do today.

Nikon has finally updated its 85mm F1.8 AFD with the NEW Nikon 85mm F1.8G AFS. The new AFS lens is aimed at professionals and amateurs a like. What makes this a very enticing lens is the fact that it sells for $499.99. At that price it gives amateurs and pros a reasonably priced professional lens to help them take their images to the next level.

In this review I put the new 85 1.8g AFS against the older 85 1.8 AFD and for fun I brought out the 85mm f1.f AFS Nikon. While I was at Allen's Camera I set up a quick little test shooting scene and than used the three lenses listed above to capture the same scene.
